About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

The North Shore is home to over 80 species of edible wild plants, some of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. These include native species, like Beach Plum and Black Raspberry; non-native weeds, like Chicory and Burdock; and invasive species, like Black Locust and Japanese Knotweed. Join Russ Cohen, author of the book Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, for a 2-hour late-afternoon ramble through Newhall Fields Community Farm to learn about at least 18 species of edible wild plants. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided, along with info on edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation methods, as well as guidelines for safe, ethical and environmentally-responsible foraging.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I park?

Parking is available along Lynn Street and you will have a short walk down our driveway. We will have signage to direct you. Please contact us if you need closer parking and we will do our best to accommodate.

Should I bring anything?

Attendees are welcome to bring their own clippers or jackknife for gathering and bags for collecting samples, as well as a notebook and pen if they'd like to take notes. All of these are optional, of course.

Anything else I should know?

Dress for a walk around our property that may veer into tall grass or wooded areas. Ticks are a risk, so long pants and closed-toed shoes & socks are suggested.

What do you mean by "suggested donation"?

We aim to keep our programs accessible, so we offer pricing at suggested donation rates. If you can afford to donate a little more, we appreciate it ! If you want to come but can't swing it, pay less! If you are a Card to Culture member or want to come for free, use the code C2CNFCF2025 at checkout.

What is the Card to Culture Program?

Card to Culture is a Mass Cultural Council program that provides EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare cardholders free or steeply discounted admission to a variety of participating organizations across the state (which we are). Use the code C2CNFCF2025 to unlock free tickets at checkout.

Is this workshop open to children?

This workshop is geared more to adults. That said, children over the age of 8 are welcome to come, accompanied by an adult guardian.

Will Russ have copies of his book for sale?

Yes! Russ will have copies of “Wild Plants I Have Known… and Eaten,” available for purchase at the event. He accepts cash and checks, so if you'd like to purchase please be prepared with one of those options.

At Newhall Fields Community Farm, our mission is to enhance food security by growing and supplying low-moderate income families with high quality food that is affordable, accessible, and inclusive. Over 60% of the food grown at the farm is donated to local hunger relief organizations in the Peabody area. We use regenerative agriculture and volunteer power to grow community and provide hands-on experience and education.

As a registered United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary, the expansive Herb Garden at Newhall Fields Community Farm consists of over 100 species of perennial plants- including culinary herbs, medicinal herbs, and some at-risk plants. Many of the them are aromatic, inviting touch and smell, creating an experience that is deeply nourishing and healing in nature. We host workshops and events throughout the season.
