About this event

This comprehensive, full-day training is crafted to empower adoptive, foster, kinship parents and professionals with valuable insights into the complexities of adoption/foster care/kinship caregiving. In the morning session, participants will delve into key adoption themes such as loss, identity, and rejection, gaining effective strategies for fostering openness and navigating relationships with birth families. Parents will also receive practical tools to communicate with their children about adoption in ways that are honest, supportive, and age-appropriate.

In the afternoon, the training will focus on understanding the effects of trauma on a child’s development and attachment, particularly for those impacted by adoption, foster care, and kinship care. Parents will learn evidence-based strategies grounded in a "relationship-first" parenting approach, equipping them to better support and nurture the emotional and psychological well-being of their children.

Frequently asked questions

You say that the training location is to be announced. What does that mean/Why?

Depending on the number of registrants we may need to consider using other community spaces for the training. We will be within a 15-20 minute radius of the C2Adopt office in Henrico County for any alternative locations that we use.

Do you provide food?

We will have snacks and drinks available for folks. We recommend that you eat breakfast and bring your morning beverage of choice. We will have lunch break and you can either bring lunch to eat at the training location or you can venture to a nearby place to get lunch and bring back.

This is a long day. Are there breaks?

We will have a morning and afternoon break and lunchtime break built into the day. We will also have several interactive activities to help break up the training and provide some hands on learning.

I can't come the whole day. Is that okay?

We ask that you only attend on a date when you can join for the whole day. In order to provide a training environment that works for everyone - it works best when there are the same faces in the room throughout the day and limited disruptions with folks coming and going.

What if I'm not a client or I am a professional? Can I attend?

YES! We want ANYONE connected to kinship, foster care and adoption to attend. We do not charge for our trainings to reduce barriers to learning, however, we ask that you consider a donation of $25/per person to allows us to continue offering to the larger community.

Do you provide childcare during the training?

No. We do not offer childcare during the training.
