For our Black August screening, we invite you into the luminous world of Yeelen, a cornerstone of African cinema that interweaves myth, nature, and spiritual inheritance. Set against the stunning landscapes of Mali and rooted in Bambara cosmology, Yeelen tells the story of Nianankoro, a young mystic on a journey of survival, transformation, and reckoning with the powers that raised him. Fire, sun, water, and earth guide and test him—each element holding both danger and revelation.
Opening the evening is Kai Hartman’s If the Sun Exploded Today, a visually striking short that meditates on solar power, ancestry, and time. In conversation with Yeelen, it invites us to think deeply about what we inherit—and what we’re called to become.
Held at the Prospect Park Boathouse, this open-air screening brings together the celestial and the grounded, cinema and ceremony.
